2020 - 2021 Halifax Bird Report Now Out.

The 2020 - 2021 Halifax Bird Report is now available from the GO LOCAL STORE (Woodlesford News) at Pellon - Mount Tabor, price £7.00.

2nd and 3rd October

Over 800 large gulls roosting at Fly Flats on 2nd and 3rd October. We managed to find an adult Great Black backed and an adult Yellow-legged Gull, the GBBGull is now the scarcer bird of the two in Calderdale. Also a nice Red Kite flew over on the 2nd putting all the gulls up.

Back down to 210

Unfortunatly the Marsh Tit at E.G.P. as been re-identified as a juvenile Willow Tit by an expert who did a PHD on the pair. A Wood Sandpiper a good bird for Calderdale was found at Blackstone Edge on 23rd August which was a nice concellation being the first for 26 years. 30th August, a good night out brought us Marsh Harrier, 2 Hens, 1 Peregrine, 1 Sparrowhawk, 2 Buzzards, 5 Kestrels and a Barn Owl.

211 Marsh Tit

At last finally got a Marsh Tit on my Calderdale list taking me to 211 for the Halifax Area. It turned up at the feeding station at Cromwell Bottom on 20th August the day of my Zeiss ht 8x42s 7th birthday.

Last few days spent watching a Shortie hunt for a family of 5, also nearby adult Leo hunting for 2 young, 1 Barn and 1 Little Owl + 2 Hen Harriers and a Sanderling last week.

Me and Dave went for the Red-tailed Shrike at Bempton on 2nd July and it permormed very well.

26th June

26th June on the moors again, great night out with 2 Red Kites, 1 Marsh Harrier, 1 Peregrine, 10 Kestrels, 8 Buzzards, 1 Sparrowhawk, 6 Shorties, 1 Barn Owl, Spotted Flycatcher, Raven and a Sand Martin.

22nd June

Me and Roy had a great evenings birding, it started with a superb Hobby that we watched for over 2 hours hawking insects and chasing Meadow Pipits, it looked to be probably a first summer bird ?, also a first summer female Marsh Harrier, a Peregrine, 3 Kestrels, 3 Buzzards, 3 Shorties, 2 Barn Owls, 2 Grasshopper Warblers and 2 Stonechats + all the usual waders.

18th June

Checked out another Peregrine site and found 3 juvs had already fledged, also 3 fledged juvs at original site.

Poplar Grey

Had a go trapping moths with the hot weather for the last two days and caught myself a new species, a Poplar Grey.

8th - 13th June Leos +

Another Leo site was checked out and it didnt dissapoint with the male seen to pass food to the female on the edge of the wood, photos below. 1 young was heard hunger calling later on and 2 Tawnys were heard calling to one another, other species included a Shorty and a Buzzard. A few days later 2 Barn Owl nests were confirmed, the local Peregrines fledged 3 young and there were lots of young birds in the Walshaw area including Great Spotted Woodpeckers and several wader chicks.

18th May

Out and about with Roy this evening and I finaly got 2 Little Owls for the year list, also 2 Shorties and several Red-legged Partridge. First Whitethroat of the year earlier in the week at Roils Head.
